Toledo scores four runs each in seventh and eighth innings to earn 20th MAC win of season
Â
The Rockets (27-25, 20-10 MAC) trailed 2-0 after the Bobcats scored a run each in the fourth and sixth innings. A Jacob Payne home run tied the game in the seventh, followed by the go-ahead tallies with two outs in the inning. Toledo then scored four times with two outs in the eighth inning to put the game away in an 8-2 advantage. Toledo remains within two games of Kent State and Miami (22-8) for first place in the MAC, currently in fourth place in the standings.
Â
The Rockets earned their seventh series win of 10 MAC series this season. Dating back to last season, UT has won 12 of its last 15 conference series. The Rockets earned 20 conference victories for the third time under Head Coach Rob Reinstetle, and the first time since 2022.
Â
Toledo got multi-hit efforts from a quartet of juniors – Troy Sudbrook, Charlie Scholvin, Cade Baker and JP Wagner. Junior Jacob Payne launched a two-run home run in the seventh inning. He had two RBIs on the day along with Sudbrook and Baker. Sudbrook and freshman Liam Arsich each scored a pair of runs, with Arsich drawing three walks.
Â
Sudbrook's two RBIs made him Toledo's single-season RBI record holder, with 64 RBIs so far this season.
Â
Redshirt freshman Michael Fliss (3-1) threw 7.0 impressive innings for his longest outing of the season, allowing just two runs, one earned on six hits with 10 strikeouts to two walks. All three of Toledo's starters – Nathan Leininger, Hayden Frey and Fliss went 7.0 innings in their outings this weekend. Nate Langbehn and Ryan Hughes worked the eighth and ninth innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really happy to pull that win out today. Their starter kept us off-balance all day with his off-speed stuff. We finally made some adjustments and put up some big numbers towards the end of the game. Michael Fliss was sensational today and gave us an outstanding start. We have a big week ahead of us with our rivals in the Battle of I-75 and a huge weekend series versus Kent State – a series that could decide the MAC."
