Nathan Leininger and Hayden Frey combine for five-hit shutout
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team pitched a shutout and broke open a close game in the eighth inning to win its Mid-American Conference opener in a 5-0 triumph over UMass at Scott Park on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Rockets (4-8, 1-0 MAC) shut down the Minutemen (4-3, 0-1 MAC) but held just a 1-0 edge through seven innings. The Rockets then exploded for four runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Â
Senior Nathan Leininger and junior Hayden Frey combined for a five-hit shutout, with Leininger tossing the first six innings and Frey covering the final three. Leininger marked his second start this season with six shutout innings (Jacksonville State, Feb. 21). Frey allowed just one baserunner in his three innings. Toledo pitching earned its first shutout since April 17, 2025 against Western Michigan.
Â
At the plate, graduate student Saborn Campbell and junior Jacob Payne supplied multi-hit games with a run scored and an RBI each. Campbell's fourth-inning RBI single stood as the winning run.
Â
The Rockets will look to win the three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Game three is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"I'm really happy we got the win to open MAC play. Baseball is a funny game, sometimes you play really well and lose and sometimes you don't play your best and come out victorious. That game was a lot closer than it needed to be. We had multiple opportunities early to blow it open and shot ourselves in the foot offensively. I give a lot of credit to Nate Leininger and Hayden Frey for pitching so well and giving us a chance to win. I think Deron Swanson will give us another good start tomorrow. We need to come out and swing the bats like we are capable of and take the series."
