Preston Zumwalt secures first career hit and RBI
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Toledo baseball team was defeated by Butler, 11-1 to begin the week in an eight-inning affair at Bulldog Field on Tuesday.
Â
The Bulldogs led 1-0 after three innings, then extended the advantage with two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and two more tallies in the sixth. Toledo got on the board in the seventh, but Butler responded with five runs in the eighth inning to force the run rule.
Â
Freshman Preston Zumwalt got his first career RBI on an RBI double in the seventh inning. Junior Cole Cahill tallied his fifth multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-3 effort.
Â
Cole Giesige (0-2) started and pitched a season-high five innings, allowing four runs, three earned, with seven strikeouts to one walk. Freshman Sam Rufenacht saw his first career action, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Freshman Henry Johnson also saw his first career action on the mound.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really disappointed with the effort today by our position players. We played down to our opponent versus playing good baseball. This is a game that takes total focus and being at your best to win. You can't ever just walk into a game and expect to win, and that's how I feel we played today on offense and defense. That falls on me as a head coach. I need to do a better job of getting our players to play regardless of who we play. They all count. The only bright side of today was that we had a couple of guys get on the mound and throw the ball really well. With a good Michigan team tomorrow and a big MAC series at Akron this weekend, we'd better wake up and get back to playing good baseball."
