Toledo trails Golden Flashes by a game in conference standings
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's basketball team (12-10, 6-4 MAC) looks to even its season series against Kent State (16-6, 7-3 MAC) and move into a tie for third place when it hosts the Golden Flashes on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena with streaming on ESPN+. The Rockets are in fourth place in the MAC standings, trailing Miami (22-0, 10-0), Akron (18-4, 9-1) and KSU.
Toledo turned in its best defensive outing of the season in Saturday's convincing 73-55 home win over Ball State. The Rockets limited the Cardinals to a 31.4 FG%, the lowest shooting mark by a Division I opponent since Western Michigan shot 28.8% on Feb. 27, 2021.
Sonny Wilson tallied a game-high 19 points and seven assists to lead UT against BSU, while Sean Craig delivered another solid all-around performance by tallying 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Leroy Blyden Jr. added 13 points, five boards, and three assists, with Jaylan Ouwinga providing a spark off the bench with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Wilson set the tone early, scoring 13 points in the first half as the Rockets built a 39–27 halftime advantage. Toledo shot 57.7% in the first half and used a 14–4 run midway through the half to build a cushion they never relinquished.
The Rockets are led by the backcourt duo of Wilson (17.2 ppg) and Blyden (16.1 ppg) along with the frontcourt tandem of Craig (12.5 ppg) and Austin Parks (11.0 ppg). Blyden leads all MAC freshmen in scoring, while Wilson ranks fifth in the MAC with a team-high 4.8 apg. Craig ranks fourth in the MAC with a team-best 7.9 rpg.
Toledo dropped an 87-84 decision at Kent State on Jan. 16. The Golden Flashes will be looking to bounce back from Friday's 69-52 defeat at second-place Akron. KSU shot 28.4% vs. the Zips, including a 1-of-23 mark from three-point range.
Senior forward Delrecco Gillespie is averaging a team-high 19.0 ppg for Kent State and leads the nation with 12.0 rpg.
