2023-24 All-BIG EAST Freshman Team member has two years of eligibility remaining
TOLEDO, Ohio – Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced on Sunday that Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) will transfer to the University of Toledo to join the Rockets' men's basketball program next season. Barron has two years of eligibility remaining after being a member of Providence's basketball program for the last three years.
A 6-foot-5, 225-pound forward, Barron earned a spot on the 2023-24 All-BIG EAST Freshman Team and averaged 17.3 mpg in 60 games (19 starts) he played with the Friars. He shot 42.9% (36-of-84) from three-point range as a freshman and has knocked down 70-of-185 attempts (37.8%) from distance as a collegian. Barron scored in double digits in six BIG EAST Conference games, including a career-high 23-point outing at Butler (Feb. 8, 2025) that included 7-of-9 shooting from three-point range.
"We recruited Rich hard out of high school and we're very happy to have him join our program," Kowalczyk said. "He's a very talented, strong wing player who plays multiple positions and can really shoot it. We've had a lot of success recruiting Chicago, and Rich is right there in the mold of guys like Tyler Cochran and Dante Maddox Jr. He has a lot of upside, and I'm excited to see him grow his game even more."
Barron averaged 16.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 3.0 apg as a senior at St. Ignatius en route to earning IBCA 3A All-State First Team and Chicago Catholic League All-Conference First Team accolade. He also received all-state honors and Chicago Sun Times All-City recognition as a junior after averaging 15.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.3 apg and 1.2 spg and shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc.
