Rockets adding First-Team America East honoree who averaged 20.0 ppg in league play
TOLEDO, Ohio – Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced on Monday that Angel Montas Jr. (La Romana, D.R.) will transfer to the University of Toledo to join the Rockets' men's basketball program next season.
A 6-foot-6, 225-pound guard, Montas earned First-Team America East honors after leading UMass-Lowell with 15.8 ppg and ranking second on the team with 5.1 rpg and 0.9 spg. A three-time America East Player of the Week, Montas scored a conference-high 20.0 ppg in league play and registered twelve 20-point outings, including three contests with 30 points or more, for the Riverhawks last season. He also averaged 7.2 ppg and 3.1 rpg in 21 games for Mercer in the 2024-25 campaign and saw limited action due to injuries in his first two years as a collegian at Fordham (2022-24).
Â
"Angel is a very physical player who at 6-6, 225 pounds has a great feel for the game," Kowalczyk said. "He can score it and is one of those guys who is kind of position-less and is just a really good basketball player. I've had three players from the Dominican Republic in my career, and they were each unbelievably tough, highly competitive and great teammates. I look at Angel as being right there with them."
A three-star recruit by 247sports, Montas averaged 34.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 3.4 spg and 2.7 apg as a senior at Life Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Fla. He was a three-time player of the year and a Sunshine Independent Athletic Association (SIAA) first-team All-State selection. Montas scored more than 4,000 points in his high school career.
