Junior Austin Parks leads Rockets with 17 points and eight rebounds
TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo men's basketball team led for nearly the entire contest but came up on the short end of a 75-72 decision to third-place Kent State in a physical Mid-American Conference battle on Tuesday night in Savage Arena. The Rockets dropped to 12–11 overall and 6–5 in MAC play with the defeat, while the Golden Flashes improved to 17–6 (8–3 MAC).
Junior center Austin Parks topped the Rockets with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and hauled down a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Sonny Wilson contributed 14 points and a team-high five assists. Sophomore guard Mynor Strong poured in a season-high 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and grabbing a season-best seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Jaylan Ouwinga provided a spark off the bench once again, scoring in double figures for a third straight game with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and a pair of three-pointers.
Toledo came out firing, shooting 48.4% in the first half to take a 36–29 lead into the break. The Rockets held Kent State to just 34.3% shooting in the opening 20 minutes and forced seven Golden Flash turnovers.
Toledo expanded its lead to 63-46 with 9:21 remaining before the Golden Flashes rallied. Wilson's floater in the lane put the Rockets ahead, 69-62, with 3:01 remaining. KSU then scored 10 straight points and took a 72-69 lead on Cian Medley's triple with 46.8 seconds left.
Toledo had a chance to tie the contest at 73-73 with 6.7 seconds left, but freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. could only make one of two free throws.
QUOTING HEAD COACH TOD KOWALCZYK:
"It's obviously a disappointing loss for us. We battled, but we struggled to score down the stretch. I thought we settled for a couple of threes when they were making their run. Kent State is a good, well-coached team and they have an NBA player in Delrecco Gillespie. They made some tough shots at the end, and we had a couple of chances around the basket that we couldn't finish."
