Hard-earned three-set victories not enough to overcome Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo women's tennis team dropped a close match, 4-3, to Western Michigan on Sunday. The Rockets registered three-set victories on the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 courts from Audrey Moutama, Gaby Rondon, and Annika Munson, respectively.

Jacklynka Scholten and Neha Guru picked up a 6-2 victory on the No. 1 doubles court, but it wasn't enough as Western Michigan (11-9, 2-3 MAC) grabbed the doubles point after taking wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.

Toledo (9-6, 2-3 MAC) faced a 3-0 deficit after dropping straight set matches on the No. 6 and No. 5 courts. Moutama picked up a three-set victory on the No. 1 court to put Toledo on the board, 3-1. Western Michigan clinched match point after Jone Ibanez fell in three sets on the No. 3 court.

Rondon picked up a three-set victory on the No. 2 court, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Munson wrapped up play with a third-set tiebreaker win on the No. 4 court, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to conclude the day with a final score of 4-3.

"These tough back-to-back 4-3 losses will burn for a while. We went through something very similar to this four years ago and it was very motivating to all the freshman at that time. I hope that this squad can find the lessons in these losses and use them to spur change."

UP NEXT
Toledo will continue conference play at home against Eastern Michigan on Friday, April 4. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. and will be played at TWOs Athletic Club (indoor) or UT Varsity Tennis Courts (outdoor), weather permitting.
