Rockets clinch first ranked win since March 2023

TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Matias Olivero clinched a 4-3 victory for Toledo men's tennis over No. 70-ranked Buffalo on Saturday at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. Olivero was down 5-1 in a decisive third set on the No. 3 singles court and came back to take the win, 7-5, to give Toledo its first Mid-American Conference win of the season.

This is the first ranked win of the season for the Rockets and the first win over an ITA ranked opponent since Toledo defeated No. 74 Ball State, 4-3, on March 11, 2023.

The Rockets (7-6, 1-2 MAC) got an early 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. Joshua Mackey and Lucas Britez claimed a 6-2 win on the No. 3 doubles court. Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-5) victory on the No. 1 court.

Toledo started off singles play with wins from Komolpisut on the No. 2 court and Joshua Mackey on the No. 6 court to take a 3-0 lead. Buffalo responded by taking wins on the No. 1, 4 and 5 singles courts to even the match, 3-3.

Olivero's comeback victory in the third set clinched the 4-3 win for the Rockets and moved the team to 6-0 at home this season.

UP NEXT
Toledo will host UIC and Northern Illinois on Thursday, March 20 and Saturday, March 22. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. for both matches. Match locations will be at Shadow Valley Tennis Club or the UT Varsity Tennis Courts, weather-dependent.
