Toledo Shuts Down Kent State in Doubleheader Sweep

Rockets improve to 9-2 in league play with eighth consecutive Mid-American Conference victory

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo softball team swept its doubleheader with Kent State on Saturday afternoon, 8-4 in the opener, followed by a 4-3 final in the nightcap. The Rockets have now won eight straight Mid-American Conference games to improve their league record to 9-2, and have a 5-0 home record at Scott Park.

Toledo broke ground with three runs in the first inning of Game One, but Kent State overcame the deficit in the second and took a one-run lead in the fourth. The Rockets rallied with four runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth to make it 8-4, which stood as the final margin.

In the nightcap, Toledo held a one-run lead until Kent State rallied for three runs in the fourth to take its first lead of the game. The Rockets matched three runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead and held off KSU for the final three innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.

Junior Sophia Knight (12-5) pitched a complete game in the first contest, allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned). Junior Kylee Graham (6-5) got the start of Game Two and allowed three runs, all earned, in 5.0 innings of work. Knight came on in relief for 2.0 innings in the nightcap and allowed only one hit to pick up her first save of the year.

Senior Emily Bracamonte led the offense with five hits on the day, and junior Maris Barbato drove in a team-high three runs. Senior Lauren Erickson and Riley Mohr each hit two doubles, while junior Eli Enriquez hit her fifth triple of the year.

Mohr now has 33 doubles in her career to reach the No. 10 spot in Toledo history, trailing No.8 Hall of Famer Brenda Steinbrunner (1986-89) and Lacey LeVier (2007-10) by one. Chandler Rice (2014-17) holds the program record with 50 doubles. Enriquez tied Lindsey Tobias's 2013 record for five triples in a single season, which ranks No.3 all-time in program history. Hall of Famer Kelly Meinhart hit a school record eight triples in 1985.

Toledo (18-13, 9-2 MAC) and Kent State (18-14, 4-6 MAC) will close out the series tomorrow, with a single game scheduled for noon.
