TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's track & field team set multiple personal records and recorded several top-10 program finishes in notable performances at the Wake Forest Invitational and the Jesse Owens Track Classic on Friday.
Â
"I'm so proud of our squad tonight," Head Coach
Andrea Grove-McDonough said. "We had great attitudes and great efforts. That led to some incredible performances."
Toledo's distance runners registered impressive performances at Wake Forest with four different personal records set in Winston-Salem. Graduate student
Laura Nicholson (4:11.65 – 1500m), senior
Vilde Henriksen (10:03.43 – 3000m Steeplechase), junior
Alex Bauer (4:23.32 – 1500m) and sophomore
Lianna Surtz (10:41.04 – 3000m) all registered top times.
Â
Nicholson's time ranks second in program history for the 1500m and puts her among the top 15 times in the country this season. Bauer's 1500m time ranks eighth in program history. Freshman
Mercy Kinyanjui set a 10000m debut time of 33:28.22, second all-time in program history, just 2.91 seconds behind Stephanie Sherman's time of 33:25.31 at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Henriksen's 3000m steeplechase time was UT's fourth-best all time.
Â
Junior men's cross country runner Sean Smith set a school record with a time of 3.48.79 in the 1500m.
Â
The sprinters and field athletes competed in Columbus with freshman
Nora Hark besting last week's performance with a top throw of 38.60m in the javelin.
Â
Toledo finished with seven top-10 finishes in Friday's meets, with Bauer and Kinyanjui each recording first-place finishes at Wake Forest.
