Toledo Splits Doubleheader at NIU with 6-5 Win in Nightcap

Rockets rebound after falling 2-1 in eight innings in opener

DeKALB, Ill. – The Toledo softball team split its doubleheader at Northern Illinois on Saturday by posting a 6-5 victory in the nightcap after falling 2-1 (8 inn.) in the opener. 

The Huskies (12-25, 5-10 MAC) surged to a 3-0 advantage in Game Two. The Rockets (19-15, 10-4 MAC) kept chipping away though, and eventually took their first lead with two runs in the seventh. UT then retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame to salvage the final game of the three-game set.

Freshman Mady Yackee (1-0) earned her first collegiate victory in Game Two after entering the contest with UT trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first. She gave up four hits and struck out a season-high seven batters in 6.2 innings.

The opener was scoreless until the fifth when senior Lauren Erickson blasted a solo shot over the left-field fence. Northern Illinois tied the game in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and won it in the eighth with a walk-off double.

For the series, Erickson and junior Sidney Griffith each tallied a team-high four hits. Erickson hit two homers in three games to bring her career total to 14. Graduate student Emily Bracamonte had a home run and also had three RBIs.

Toledo will be back in action when it faces Ohio (20-19, 8-6 MAC) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16 at Scott Park.

Game 1 – Northern Illinois 2, Toledo 1 (8 inn.)
  • Lauren Erickson homered to left field to give Toledo a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
  • Alana Powell's bases-loaded walk brought home the tying run for NIU in the sixth.
  • Trinity Jones Estrada's walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth ended the game.
GAME 2 – Toledo 6, Northern Illinois 5
  • Northern Illinois opened the game with three runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Danielle Stewart.
  • Toledo countered with back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the second from Kendra VanderLugt and Emily Bracamonte.
  • Jenna Turner doubled the Huskies' lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the second.
  • Lauren Erickson's run-scoring single cut the Rockets' deficit to 4-3 in the third.
  • Ellis Erickson's RBI single pushed NIU ahead in the fourth.
  • Sidney Griffith's RBI single closed the gap to 5-4 in the fifth.
  • Kendra VanderLugt's sacrifice fly brought home the tying run and Bracamonte's RBI single gave Toledo a 6-5 lead in the seventh.
