Toledo Takes Care of Business, Downs Buffalo 5-2

Rockets win fourth-straight match and end the regular season with a 12-10 overall record with a 7-3 league mark

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team ended its regular season on a high note with a 5-2 win vs. Buffalo on Saturday at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. The Rockets (12-10, 7-3 MAC) beat the Bulls (4-15, 0-10 MAC) in the conference opener by the same margin on March 9.

Toledo now awaits its seeding for the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Rockets will be the No.2 or No. 3 seed, depending on the tiebreaker scenario with the loser between Northern Illinois (18-4, 7-2 MAC) and Western Michigan (15-5, 7-2 MAC), who will go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon for the conference title.

Before the start of Saturday's match, head coach Al Wermer and the team honored seniors Marko Galic, Adam Kovac, and Pawit Sornlaksup. All three seniors collected a singles win in their final home match as a Rocket.

Toledo had an answer to Buffalo winning the doubles point, by taking the first five singles courts to secure the match and cap the regular season. Kovac tied the match at 1-1 from his victory over Finn Macnamara at the No. 5 spot. Sornlaksup took Daniils Snaiders in two sets at the top court, and freshman Cole Cozens won the No. 4 court in two sets to put Toledo at match point. Junior Hanamichi Carvajal clinched his first match as a Rocket in a back-and-forth two-setter with Michael Maklin at the No. 3 court.

Galic and freshman Poonthong Komolpisut both lost their opening sets but came back in the second sets to force a tiebreaker. Galic won the super tiebreaker (4-6, 6-4, 10-4) over Theodoros Mitsakos at the No. 2 spot. Komolpisut fought to the very end but fell in the tiebreaker, and Buffalo picked up its final team point.

The 2024 MAC Men's Tennis Championship will take place at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts in Toledo, Ohio. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and the final will take place on Sunday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
