Rockets Conquer the Cougars 4-3 in Non-Conference Finale

Cassie Alcala reaches 90th career singles victory in Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC – Senior Julia Kuszynski clinched match point to end the Toledo women's tennis team's spring break trip and non-conference play with a 4-3 victory over the College of Charleston on Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Rockets to 7-4 this season before conference play begins next weekend.

"One of Julia's goals before the match was to use her experience during her singles play," Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. "When it came down to her, the match was tied 3-3 and I know her teammates felt confident in her. She played so big down the stretch to clinch the win for us."

Toledo had another strong performance in doubles play, winning the doubles point from the No. 2 and 3 courts to take a 1-0 match lead into singles action. The College of Charleston came out swinging in singles play, with four courts decided in three sets.

Sophomore Audrey Moutama won the No. 4 court in straight sets, the only Rocket to do so in the match. Senior Cassie Alcala (No.1) kept UT in the running by winning her second set and the tiebreaker after losing the opening frame to Maja Jekauc to record her 90th career singles victory.

Senior Sloane Teske fought back in the second set against Halli Trinkle to even the score but came up short in the tiebreaker at the No. 2 court. Freshman Jone Ibanez opened her match with a win but was defeated in back-to-back sets by Anna Neyestani for the loss at the No. 6 spot. The Cougars' only other victory of the afternoon was at the No. 3 spot.

The deciding match came down to Kuszynski at the No. 5 court. She fell behind in her first set to Francesca Salvato in a 7-6 (4), took control in the second set 6-3, and clinched match point in the 6-4 tiebreaker victory.

"I'm so proud of the way this team fought today," said Mauntler. "The teams we played down here in Charleston are so tough outside and this team battled."

Toledo will begin Mid-American Conference play next week when it hosts Western Michigan on Saturday, March 16 at Twos Athletic Club.
