Rockets to play single games on Friday and Sunday with a doubleheader on Saturday
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team continues the non-conference portion of its 2024 schedule this weekend when it travels to Rock Hill, S.C. for a four-game series vs. Winthrop on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 23-25. First pitch against the Eagles is set for 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Winthrop Ballpark. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., with the series finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Rockets (1-2) opened their 2024 campaign last weekend by dropping two of three games at Mercer. UT opened the series by posting a 5-4 (10 inn.) victory last Friday before falling in the final two contests. Juniors Caden Konczak and Kaleb Herbert led UT to its win with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Herbert and junior Brayden White are leading Toledo offensively with .375 batting averages. Konczak and junior Garret Pike are also hitting over .300 for the Rockets with .333 marks each.

Fifth-year senior Noah Johnson is expected to lead Toledo on the mound this weekend after starting Toledo's Opening Day win over Mercer. Johnson fanned eight batters in 5.2 innings pitched.

Sophomore Jackson Bergman, junior Brennan McCune, junior Tristan Sipple, senior Camryn Szynski and freshman Jacob Tabor each came out of the bullpen last weekend to throw at least one scoreless inning for the Rockets.

Bergman fanned three batters in 1.2 hitless innings to earn the victory in Friday's season opener, while Szyinki picked up his sixth career save with a scoreless 10th frame. McCune recorded a pair of strikeouts in his inning of work on Sunday.

Winthrop is winless in its first four games after getting swept in a three-game home series vs. Rutgers and dropping a 12-2 decision at South Carolina on Tuesday. The Eagles finished third in the Big South Conference last year with a 15-12 record and were 28-28 overall.

Jaylen Hernandez is Winthrop's top hitter with a .357 batting average and a team-high two doubles. Reese Lumpkin has been the Eagles' most effective starting pitcher to date, allowing five hits and striking out eight batters in 7.1 IP last Saturday vs. Rutgers.
