UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Toledo men's tennis team followed a monumental 4-3 upset over Penn State last night with a 5-2 victory vs. Temple on Sunday afternoon. The victory in University Park, Pa. improved the Rockets to 4-3 on the season.
Back-to-back singles victories from senior
Pawit Sornlaksup and junior
Hanamichi Carvajal put Toledo at match point, and graduate student Mark Galic came through for UT with a match-clinching win at the No. 2 court.
Once again, sophomore
Matias Olivero had the longest match of the afternoon. Olivero lost his first set to Adam Kresina, came back to win the second set 7-5, and got the last word in a 16-14 super tiebreaker from the No. 5 court. A day earlier, Olivero won an epic three-set match that clinched Toledo's win over Penn State.
Head coach
Al Wermer praised his team for their performance in back-to-back matches.
"I was most impressed by how our guys responded from a 12-hour turnaround from yesterday's big match – physically, mentally, and emotionally," Wermer said. "This was not easy, and I think it proves the toughness that this group is developing. We have the potential to do some pretty great things."
Saturday's match was the first between Toledo and Temple since 2009.
Toledo will welcome Wayne State in its home opener at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Friday, Feb. 2 at 1:00 p.m.
