Rockets Tame Huskies in 7-4 Road Win

Camryn Szynski throws six strong innings in Saturday’s win

DEKALB, Ill. – The Toledo baseball team captured another road win at Northern Illinois on Saturday, defeating the Huskies 7-4.

The Rockets (22-24, 10-13 MAC) got off to a hot start on Saturday, taking a 6-0 lead through four innings. Northern Illinois got on the board in the bottom of the fifth and put up a crooked number in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome Toledo's hitting and pitching.

In what has been a record-breaking offensive season for the Rockets, they broke another school record on Saturday. Jeron Williams stole two bases to bring the team's season total to 86, which is a new single-season school record. Williams has accounted for 44 of them and is now six stolen bases away from tying the all-time MAC single-season stolen base record of 50 set by Central Michigan's Larry Lamphere in 1988.

"Overall that was a really complete game," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It all starts on the mound and Camryn Szynski gave us a great start. On another tough day of wind, our offense did a good job of scoring runs. Also a big congrats to this offensive unit for breaking another school record. We set the school record for stolen bases last year, and broke it again today. Very fitting that it was Jeron Williams, the nation's best base stealer, who stole the record-breaking base. We have done a nice job so far but need to come back tomorrow ready to play and get the sweep."

Williams was excellent on Saturday, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two stolen bases. After collecting the game-winning hit in Friday's extra-inning win, sophomore Brayden White drove in three runs to help the cause on Saturday. Freshman Troy Sudbrook, sophomore Garret Pike, and sophomore Owen Jackson all turned in multi-hit performances as well.

Szynski made his third start of the year and was fantastic, throwing six innings and allowing just one unearned run. It was Syznski's longest outing of the year.

The Rockets will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.

How it Happened
  • Brayden White drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single in the top of the first to make it 1-0.
  • White extended the lead to 2-0 with a sac fly in the third inning.
  • The biggest offensive inning of the day for UT was the top of the fourth, when it plated four runs to extend its lead to 6-0. All four runs were scored with two outs.
  • Troy Sudbrook's RBI single started the offensive rally and Jeron Williams followed with a run-scoring double. Garret Pike's two-run single capped the inning and gave Toledo its big lead.
  • Northern Illinois scored on a Toledo error in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board.
  • Williams scampered home on White's fielder's choice to give the Rockets another run in the top of the ninth.
  • The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and Jake Nelson brought everyone home on a bases-clearing double, but that wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit.
