Junior registers second-best round of day thanks to three birdies and an eagle
BATH, Mich. – Junior Barend Botha registered the second-best round of the day with a four-under par 67 on Tuesday to move up a whopping 30 spots and into a 21st -place tie following the second round of the 2023 NCAA Bath Regional being held at the par-71, 7,090-yard Eagle Eye Golf Club.
Botha played a flawless round after registering a bogey on the par-three, 157-yard No. 2 hole. He answered that bogey with a birdie on the par-four, 351-yard No. 3 hole. He later birdied the par-four, 428-yard No. 7 hole to enter the back nine at one-under.
After collecting another birdie on the par-four, 442-yard No. 11 hole, Botha eagled the par-five, 560-yard 14th hole after lofting a four-iron to within five feet.
"Barend got off to a good, hard-fought start and hit some outstanding shots after getting into a groove," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "He really was solid at controlling his distances and made his high-percentage putts. Making his eagle putt on the 14th hole was a big boost."
Georgia is leading the 13-team field with an impressive 28-under par 540 with Illinois (550), Oregon (553), Texas (556) and Michigan State (557) comprising the top five. The top five teams plus one individual not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz. on May 26-31.
Botha will tee off in tomorrow's final round at 10:12 a.m.
