Junior ends season with school-record 70.5 stroke average
BATH, Mich. – Junior Barend Botha concluded his record-breaking season on Wednesday by tying for 29th place at the 2023 NCAA Bath Regional. Botha, who registered a school-record 70.5 stroke average this season, finished at one-over 214 (73-67-74) at the par-71, 7,090-yard Eagle Eye Golf Club.
"Today was probably Barend's best ball-striking day of the week," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "He hit mostly all the right shots required today, but he just left a couple too many five- to six-foot comebackers out there that ultimately were too much to overcome."
The South Africa native opened his day with a birdie on the first hole and followed up with another at No. 3 to get to four-under for the tournament. He recovered from a bogey on the seventh hole to birdie No. 10 to return to four-under and within a stroke of the individual leader. Unfortunately for Botha, he bogeyed his next three holes to eliminate any hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"To be within a shot of the individual spot with eight holes left was an experience that all the practice in the world won't allow Barend to replicate," Roope said. "He's taking with him a really valuable lesson that can propel him into next season."
No. 34 Georgia captured the regional title with a 54-hole score of 29-under par 823. The Bulldogs were followed by No. 3 Illinois (831), No. 22 Oregon (838), No. 10 Florida (840) and No. 15 Texas (842). Georgia's Ben van Wyk led all individuals with a 10-under par 203.
