Toledo Opens Weekend with 12-0 Loss vs. Central Michigan

Rockets and Chippewas will face off again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team kicked off a three-game series with Central Michigan on Friday, falling 12-0 to CMU at Scott Park.

Friday's series opener was a scoreless affair through the first two innings before the Chippewas broke the tie with a run in the top of the third. Central Michigan, which added two more runs in the top of the fourth, did most of its damage in the sixth and seventh, scoring nine combined runs in those two frames to push its lead into double digits. The Rockets were unable to get much going offensively to counteract the CMU bats.

Two of Toledo's seven hits came from sophomore Garret Pike, who went 2-for-4 on the day. Sophomore Brayden White and junior Scott Mackiewicz provided the lone extra-base hits on Friday, with both players recording doubles in the scorebook.

Four different pitchers saw time on the mound for the Rockets. Freshman Jackson Bergman proved to be the most effective, tossing 2.2 perfect frames. The rookie hurler, who made his debut on April 26, has not allowed an earned run in four outings.

Toledo and Central Michigan will continue their weekend series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • CMU took the first lead of the day on a sac fly in the top of the third. The Rockets escaped further damage thanks to an unassisted double play by Wesley Parker, who snagged a line drive and tagged the runner trying to get back to first to end the inning.
  • A pair of bases-loaded walks in the top of the fourth extended the Chippewas' lead to 3-0.
  • Back-to-back singles by Jeron Williams and Garret Pike put runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but UT couldn't bring either runner home.
  • Jacob Donahue's three-run home run in the top of the sixth gave Central Michigan a 6-0 lead.
  • The Chippewas sent nine batters to the plate and scored six runs in the top of the seventh to double its lead, making the score 12-0.
  • Jackson Bergman entered the game with two outs in the seventh an induced an inning-ending double play, then sent CMU down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to cap an impressive outing.
