Toledo Suffers 8-7 Setback on Saturday vs. Ohio

Rockets and Bobcats will wrap up series at Scott Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team led for much Saturday's game vs. Ohio, but saw its lead slip away in the ninth inning in an 8-7 loss to the Bobcats at Scott Park.

The Rockets (14-15, 6-8 MAC) led 7-2 heading into the top of the ninth but surrendered six runs in Ohio's (12-15, 10-4 MAC) final trip to the plate to fall behind 8-7. UT put a runner on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't bring him home.

After being held homerless in Friday's game, Toledo slugged three long balls on Saturday. Sophomore Caden Konczak, senior Daunte DeCello, and junior Scott Mackiewicz all hit home runs vs. OU. DeCello drove in two runs and scored twice and Mackiewicz tallied two RBIs as well.

A day after seeing his 37-game on-base streak come to an end, junior Jeron Williams walked twice and recorded two hits on Saturday. He also stole two bases, bringing his MAC-best total to 22 thefts. Sophomore Owen Jackson reached base three times with two hits and a walk

Junior Jack Walker made the start and struck out six in 4.1 innings. Sophomore Brennan McCune and senior Cal McAninch saw time out of the bullpen.

Toledo and Ohio will conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Daunte DeCello opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second to give UT an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Rockets extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third on a sac fly from Mason Sykes.
  • A pair of fourth-inning home runs gave Toledo a 5-0 lead. Caden Konczak slugged the first homer of the inning and three batters later Scott Mackiewicz launched a two-run home run.
  • Ohio got on the board with a two-run top of the fifth, but the Rockets answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Owen Jackson scored on a fielder's choice and DeCello drove in a run on a sac fly in the fifth inning to push Toledo's lead to 7-2.
  • Ohio batted around in the top of the ninth and scored six runs to stun the Rockets and take an 8-7 lead. Will Sturek started the scoring rally with an RBI double, which kicked off a stretch of four straight run-scoring hits for the Bobcats. The tying run scored on a fielder's choice and the game-winning run crossed home plate on a UT throwing error.
  • Wesley Parker drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth to reach base and Brian Fry was summoned from the dugout to pinch run, but Ohio's Braxton Kelly retired the next two batters to end the game.
