TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader vs. Western Michigan at Scott Park on Saturday.
The Rockets nearly overcame an early deficit in game one but ended up falling 9-8, and in game two WMU triumphed 13-5.
Toledo (20-23, 8-12 MAC) trailed 8-1 at one point in the first game before slugging its way back into it, pulling within a run in the seventh inning. UT hit six home runs in game one and had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to win, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Game two was a different story as Western Michigan (15-24, 12-7 MAC) scored 12 unanswered runs to take a commanding 12-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Rockets' bats woke up in the final three innings, but it was too little too late.
Toledo hit eight home runs combined in both games on Saturday, all of which were hit by eight different players. Nine different players saw the mound for the Midnight Blue and Gold in the twin bill.
Toledo and WMU will conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
How it Happened (Game 1)
- WMU scored twice in the first without notching a hit, taking advantage of free bases to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Broncos extended their lead to 4-0 in the third. The second run of the inning scored on a base hit to right field, and Garret Pike prevented further damage by throwing out a runner trying to head to third to end the inning.
- Pike got Toledo on the board in third with a solo homer.
- Western Michigan extended its lead to 8-1 with a four-run fourth. Three of the runs scored on Cade Sullivan's three-run home run.
- The Rockets cut the deficit to 8-3 with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wesley Parker led off the inning with his first career home run and Jeron Williams left the yard three batters later.
- WMU tacked on another run in the fifth, but a two-run home run off the bat of Owen Jackson made it a 9-5 ballgame.
- Troy Sudbrook lifted the first pitch he saw in the sixth over the fence in right field for a two-run home run to make the score 9-7. Brian Fry led off the inning with a bunt single and scored one pitch later on Sudbrook's dinger.
- The sixth and final home run of the game came from Caden Konczak later in the sixth to put Toledo within a run, 9-8.
- With runners at second and third in the bottom of the eighth, Owen Jackson's screaming line drive was hit right at the first basemen and the runner at second was doubled off to end the inning.
- The Rockets had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't bring either runner home.
How it Happened (Game 2)
- WMU's Cade Sullivan opened the scoring in game two with a bang, making it 4-0 with a grand slam in the third.
- Gavin Doyle immediately made it 5-0 with a solo home run in the next at-bat.
- The Broncos scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to push their lead to 8-0.
- Western Michigan had another big inning in the sixth, plating four runs to open up a 12-0 lead.
- Kade Wroot's solo homer in the seventh got the Rockets on the board but WMU's Greg Budig answered with a solo shot of his own in the the eighth to make the score 13-1.
- Toledo found offensive success in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs to put the score at 13-4. Wesley Parker and Marcus Strother tallied back-to-back RBI singles, and Scott Mackiewicz two-out RBI fielder's choice capped UT's biggest inning of game two.
- Brant Hunt's first career home run sparked the Rockets' bench in the ninth, but they would not plate any more runs in game two.
