Rockets Tame Broncos, 4-3

Toledo wins ninth-straight to maintain undefeated league record

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo women's tennis team defeated Western Michigan, 4-3, in a hard-fought conference matchup Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Rockets to 17-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in Mid-American Conference play.

"This team would run through a brick wall for their teammates and this program," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "We are a true team and that's why we have been so successful this season. Cassie Alcala and Sloane Teske, who have been leading this team for the past three years, played opponents who were hot today. And we are used to getting their points. But winning without their points shows how this team has each other's backs. We are so incredibly deep. We're looking forward to playing for a regular-season championship title next weekend."

Toledo started quickly by securing the doubles point. Sanjana Tallamraju and Julia Kuszynski won the first court of the day from the No. 2 doubles spot. Cassie Alcala and Laura Morera followed shortly after from the No. 3 court, clinching the doubles point and giving Toledo an early 1-0 match lead heading into singles play. Sloane Teske and Mariona Perez were ahead 5-4 before going unfinished on the No. 1 court.

Perez got things done quickly in two sets from the No. 4 court to give Toledo a 2-0 match lead. The Broncos struck back grabbing wins from the No.1 and 2 courts to even the match at 2-2.

Sanjana Tallamraju put the Rockets back up 3-2 following a two-set victory at the No. 5 court, and Shalini Tallamraju clinched the match for Toledo, following tiebreaker victories in both sets on the No. 3 court. The No. 6 court was still in play when Toledo clinched the match, and WMU ultimately won in a three-set decision to account for the final margin of victory.

Toledo, which is ranked No. 66 in the ITA rankings, has two matches left in the regular season. The Rockets will host Buffalo on Friday, April 21 for Senior Day before heading to Bowling Green on Sunday, April 23.
