Rockets Suffer 10-6 Setback at UT Martin

Toledo’s four-game winning streak snapped with loss vs. Skyhawks

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday with a 10-6 loss at UT Martin.

The Rockets grabbed an early lead before the Skyhawks had a chance to bat, scoring two runs in the top of the first. UT Martin responded with two runs in the second and third innings, but UT scored three runs over the fourth and fifth to take a 5-4 lead. But a six-run bottom of the sixth for Martin proved to be too much for Toledo to overcome, leading to a two-game series split.

"That was a very disappointing game today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I think we came ready to play, but after scoring those two runs in first inning, we let our guards down and thought we would roll them easily for another win. It doesn't happen that way in college baseball. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day. That's why you have to bring it every day and have that focus. But I told the team, as disappointing as that was today, let's not lose sight of fact we've played some really good baseball the past week. These early games always teach us things about our players and team. The biggest thing is to learn and grow as a group. Now we turn our sole focus to Miami and opening of MAC play. If we play up to our capabilities, I feel very good we can play with anyone we face."

Sophomores Owen Jackson and Brian Fry both had two-hit days, and Fry tallied two RBIs as well. Sophomore Garret Pike reached base four times on Wednesday, going 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored. Five different pitchers saw time on the mound, and juniors Kyle Pijaszek and Gavin Starcher proved to be the most effective. Pijaszek struck out six in three innings of work, and Starcher pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out three while not allowing a run.

Mid-American Conference play begins this weekend for Toledo. The Rockets head to Oxford to face Miami for a three-game series.

How it Happened
  • Brian Fry's two-run, two-out single in the top of the first gave the Rockets an early 2-0 lead. Jeron Williams was hit by a pitch to open the game and Garret Pike walked in the ensuing at-bat, and both scored on Fry's base hit up the middle.
  • UT Martin tied the game with a two-run bottom of the second and took the lead after scoring twice in the bottom of the third.
  • Trey Wright's sac fly in the top of the fourth trimmed the deficit to one, putting the score at 4-3.
  • Toledo plated two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Owen Jackson's RBI double tied it up and Mason Sykes drove in the go-ahead run in the next at-bat.
  • The Skyhawks scored six in the bottom of the sixth, the highlight being a grand slam from Nate Self to put the Rockets in a 10-5 hole.
  • Toledo put two runners on in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases in the eighth, but manager just one total run, which proved to be not enough in the 10-6 loss.
