Toledo Topples UT Martin, 8-3

Rockets win fourth straight, slug three home runs in victory

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team won its fourth straight game on Tuesday, an 8-3 victory at UT Martin.

The Rockets, the top home run hitting team in the MAC, slugged three more dingers in Tuesday's win. Sophomores Garret Pike and Owen Jackson, UT's leading home run hitters entering the game, each added another homer to their totals. Classmate Brayden White provided the big swing with a grand slam in the sixth inning to break the game open.

"We came out a little slow but did what we needed to do to get the win," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We continued to score in big spurts thanks to the long ball. Kyle Music and Nathan Leininger were great out of the bullpen today as well. We need to come back tomorrow and finish this midweek series off before setting our sights on Miami and the opening of MAC play."

Pike went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, his third multi-hit performance in his last four games. Jackson also tallied two hits, and junior Jeron Williams caused havoc on the basepaths with three stolen bases while recording two hits as well. White's grand slam was his first home run of the season.

Four different pitchers saw time on the mound, and junior Kyle Music and freshman Nathan Leininger proved to be the most effective of the bunch. Music earned the win with three scoreless frames, while Leininger shut out the Skyhawks in the seventh and eighth.

Toledo and UT Martin will wrap up their two-game series on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

How it Happened
  • The Skyhawks scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on bases-loaded walks.
  • Garret Pike's three-run home run in the top of the fifth gave Toledo a 3-2 lead. Scott Mackiewicz reached on a two-out walk, and Jeron Williams singled through the left side of the infield to put two runners on for Pike, who blasted an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall.
  • Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Brayden White, who proceeded to launch a grand slam deep to center field to break the game open and put the score at 7-2.
  • Music retired the first six batters he faced but ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth. He escaped the inning unscathed though, stranding three UT Martin baserunners.
  • Owen Jackson added an insurance run with a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning.
  • UT Martin plated a run on a Toledo error in the bottom of the ninth, but it proved to be too little too late.Ut
