Toledo Takes Down Youngstown State, 7-2

Four-run second inning propels Rockets to third straight win

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team extended its winning streak to three games on Tuesday with a 7-2 victory over in-state foe Youngstown State at Scott Park.

The Rockets (12-11) halted nearly every Youngstown State rally, stranding 13 YSU baserunners on the afternoon. UT also took advantage of three Penguin errors and saw solid pitching from six different hurlers to capture its third straight win.

"We did what we needed to do today and got the win," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I thought we pitched well in spots and got out of some jams, and our defense was really good too. Offensively it wasn't the best of games, but I would categorize it as opportunistic. We love a win and will never complain how they come. Now that this game is over, we can turn our full attention to a really big MAC series at Kent State. They are playing good baseball and have had a great start to their season. I feel on paper we are two pretty evenly matched teams. We'll need to play some good baseball in hostile territory, and I know we'll be up to the task."

Junior Jeron Williams continued his torrid pace at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two stolen bases. Williams has now hit safely in 31 straight games and has reached base in 33 straight games. The Archbold, Ohio native entered the game ranking in the Top 10 nationally in both hits and stolen bases and added to those totals on Tuesday.

Sophomore Garret Pike hit his ninth home run of the season and has now homered in three straight games. Pike tallied a game-high three RBIs.

Redshirt freshman Dane Hall's fourth start of the season turned out to be his best. He twirled four shutout innings and struck out three and only got stronger as his start wore on, retiring six of the last seven batters he faced. Freshman RJ Shunck, junior Gavin Starcher, sophomore Patrick Dillon, junior Kyle Pijaszek, and junior Kyle Music all pitched one inning apiece in relief. Shunck, Dillon, and Music held the Penguins scoreless in their appearances.

The Rockets will head to Kent State this weekend for a three-game Mid-American Conference series.

How it Happened
  • Youngstown State loaded the bases in the top of the first, but Dane Hall escaped unscathed.
  • Jeron Williams led off the bottom of the first with a walk, then stole second and third, and finally scored on Garret Pike's fielder's choice to put UT ahead 1-0.
  • Toledo scored four in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. The first two runs of the inning scored on a fielder's choice and an error, and Williams followed that up with an RBI double to make it 4-0. Troy Sudbrook scored on another RBI groundout to conclude the inning.
  • Pike's ninth home run of the year, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, put the Rockets ahead 6-0.
  • The Penguins got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Ian Francis.
  • Williams continued to cause havoc on the basepaths in the bottom of the seventh. After reaching on a base hit, he went from first to third on a failed pick-off attempt and scored on Pike's sac fly to increase Toledo's lead to 7-1.
  • YSU's Francis drove in another run on a solo homer in the top of the eighth to make it 7-2, but that would be the final run of the day for either squad.
