BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Toledo Baseball team concluded its weekend at the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 10-7 setback at Gardner-Webb.
The Rockets grabbed an early lead after a three-run second inning, but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Another three-spot for Gardner-Webb in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference, as both teams scored three runs the rest of the way.
"As good as we played yesterday, we couldn't replicate that today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "I continue to say that it all starts on the mound and that is where we struggled today. If you score seven-plus runs you should win almost every game you play. The offense swung the bats and produced enough to win, but we had chances to score even more and didn't. I'm very disappointed with the way we've thrown the ball on mound to this point. That being said, we win as a team and lose as a team. The challenge for us coaches is to reassess our pitching and figure out what is the best mix for us to win games."
Sophomore Trey Wright had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs to bring his weekend total to five runs driven in. Sophomore Owen Jackson hit his third home run in as many games, which highlighted his 2-for-4 performance. Also driving in runs for Toledo were sophomores Caden Konczak and Brian Fry.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound on Sunday, with senior Cal McAninch and junior Jack Walker both striking out three.
Toledo heads to Middle Tennessee for a three-game series next weekend before heading west to face UT Martin on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 7-8.
