Rockets Fall to Boilermakers, 6-1, Ending Their Six-Match Winning Streak

Cassie Alcala's winning streak halted at 14 matches in defeat

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Toledo women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback to Purdue in West Lafayette on Saturday, snapping the Rocket's six-match winning streak. This was the first loss on the road for the Rockets this year and drops their record to 7-2.

Purdue (8-1) won the doubles point and five of six singles matches. After the Boilermakers took the No.3 doubles court by a 6-2 decision, Toledo's Sloane Teske and Maiona Perez were able to tie things up following a 6-2 victory on the top court. But Purdue secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 doubles court giving them a 1-0 match lead heading into singles play.

"Even though we dropped the doubles point, I felt like we played the best doubles we've played all season today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Closing the doubles point would have put a lot more pressure on Purdue."

Purdue extended its match lead to 3-0 with two-set wins from the No. 2 and No. 6 courts, and followed with another two-set decision from the top court to clinch the match. Toledo's Sanjana Tallamraju picked up Toledo's lone win with a three-set victory over Kennedy Gibbs on the No. 5 court, improving her winning streak to six matches.

"We weren't as sharp in singles play today as we've been, so that was disappointing," Mauntler added. "I give Purdue credit as they played very well against us."

Junior Cassie Alcala put up a tough fight on the top court, but ultimately lost, putting an end to her career-high 14-match winning streak. After dropping her first set, 6-3, she forced a tiebreaker in the second set befoe losing by a 7-5 final score.

Toledo will be traveling to Florida over spring break to finish off its non-conference schedule. Louisiana Tech is on deck for the Rockets on Saturday, March 4, in Tampa, Fla.
