Last Year in Ann Arbor
Toledo and Michigan faced off at the Crisler Center last season and the Rockets came away with a 71-68 victory against the Wolverines, who were ranked No. 14 in the nation at the time.
Toledo grabbed the lead early in that game and held on for much of the night, leading by at least two possessions until the 5:54 mark of the fourth quarter. Michigan's Leigha Brown knocked down a jumper with 20 seconds left to put her team ahead 69-68, but on the Rockets' next possession Sammi Mikonowicz corralled the inbounds pass and drove to the hoop for two for what would end up being the game-winning basket. The Wolverines' last shot attempt clanked off the rim and was rebounded by Mikonowicz, who iced the game with two free throws to clinch the historic victory.
It was the Rockets' first win over a ranked opponent since 2009, and their first true road win against a ranked team in school history.
Last Time Out
The last time Toledo took the court was over Thanksgiving in San Diego, when it faced SMU and North Dakota State in the San Diego Classic. UT defeated SMU, 74-73, and topped NDSU, 73-58.
The win over the Mustangs was the most thrilling of the season, as the Rockets trailed by 17 points in the third quarter before storming back. Trailing 73-72 with 4.9 seconds remaining, Quinesha Lockett's layup beat the buzzer and capped the second-largest comeback win of the year. The following day, Toledo shot 71.4% from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Bison to wrap a 2-0 weekend in Thanksgiving.
Rocket Notes
- Toledo, which has led the MAC in attendance for 32 straight seasons and has ranked in the Top 30 nationally in 10 of the last 11 years, hosted 4,073 fans at Savage Arena in its home opener vs. Cincinnati on Nov. 19.
- Quinesha Lockett has 2,084 career points and is 61 points away from passing Mimi Olson (2,144 points) to move into second place all-time at Toledo. Kim Knuth is the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,509 career points.
- Lockett ranks sixth among active Division I players in career points and ranks first among active MAC players.
- Sophia Wiard ranks third in the MAC in both assists (4.8 APG) and assist/turnover ratio (1.8). She has led Toledo in assists in four of the first five games this year.
- Emmi Rinat caused all sorts of havoc on defense during the North Dakota State game, tallying a career-high six blocks. That's the most blocks in a game by a Rocket since Kaayla McIntyre had six vs. Northern Illinois in the 2017 MAC Tournament Championship Game.
- The Rockets have overcome halftime deficits in all three of their victories this season. Their largest comeback of the year was vs. James Madison, when they overcame a 20-point halftime deficit to win.
About Michigan
Michigan enters play on Wednesday with a 7-1 record, its lone loss coming to No. 23-ranked Ole Miss in the Bahamas on Nov. 20. The Wolverines are led offensively by junior guard Laila Phelia (15.4 PPG), who scored a season-high 25 points against Purdue Fort Wayne earlier this year. They'll face three MAC programs this year, having already defeated Eastern Michigan on Nov. 24. Michigan will also host Miami on Dec. 16.
Next Up
The Rockets' next home game will be this Sunday, Dec. 10 against Loyola (Md.) at 2:00 p.m. Sunday's game will be Toledo's Holiday Game, with the annual Teddy Bear Toss taking place at halftime. Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to throw onto the court, which will then be collected and donated to children in need.
