Toledo Taken Down by Late Northern Illinois Rally in 67-66 Setback

Rockets’ 14-game road winning streak snapped in DeKalb

DEKALB, Ill. – The Toledo women's basketball team saw its 14-game road winning streak snapped on Saturday at Northern Illinois in a 67-66 setback against the Huskies (9-4, 1-1 MAC).

The Rockets (10-3, 1-1 MAC) owned the nation's longest road winning streak coming into the game, as well as the MAC's longest active winning streak (7 games), but saw both of those streaks end on Saturday.

Toledo led 53-36 at the end of the third quarter and appeared to be in a good position to head home with a win. But the Huskies had other ideas, starting off the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to cut UT's lead to six, 53-47. Junior Lonasia Brewer got the Rockets on the scoreboard with a jumper, but NIU responded with back-to-back three-pointers to make it a one-possession game, 55-53, with 4:52 to go. Northern Illinois took its first lead of the game with 2:39 left and continued to keep pace with the Rockets for the rest of the game. A'Jah Davis tied the game at 66-66 with 10 seconds to play, and after a late Toledo turnover she went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to provide the game-winning point. NIU outscored the Rockets 31-13 in the fourth quarter to pull off the come-from-behind victory.

"I thought we were doing a pretty good job, but we left them open at the three-point line in the fourth quarter," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "They had a some critical threes late in the game, including a couple back-to-back. At times I thought we did a nice job defending A'Jah Davis, but we didn't box her out. It's bad when you get the stop you need but don't secure the rebound, then she grabs the rebound and puts it back in. I'm disappointed, but to keep things in perspective we had the longest road winning streak in the country coming into the game, so we've been doing something right. Not everything went wrong, but I'm disappointed that we gave up some offensive rebounds and three pointers that we weren't allowing early on."

Junior Sammi Mikonowicz helped Toledo win the battle on the boards, 48-38, thanks to a season-high 19 rebounds, the second-most rebounds in a game by a MAC player this season. Senior Quinesha Lockett also led the Rockets with 18 points and brought her career total to 1,579, officially passing Kaayla McIntyre (2015-19) to move into eighth place all-time in school history in career points.

Junior Khera Goss also cracked double figures in scoring, pouring in 12 points, and Brewer added nine points off the bench.

Northern Illinois was led by Davis, who scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, her MAC-best eighth double-double of the season. Chelby Koker scored 21 points and dished out a game-high six assists.

Toledo returns home for a battle against Ball State (11-3, 1-0) on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. Bleacher tickets for the Ball State game are available for $8.00 in advance and $9.00 at the door. 1st Quarter
  • Toledo scored eight of the first 10 points of the game to take a quick 8-2 lead.
  • NIU's Davis got her first bucket of the game to trim UT's lead to 8-4, but a 7-0 spurt by the Rockets upped the lead to 11 points, 15-4, with 3:25 to play. Lockett started the scoring run with a three-pointer, then Brewer and senior Jayda Jansen made consecutive baskets.
  • The Huskies managed to more than halve the Toledo lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks to seven points from Davis in the final 2:12 of play.
  • The lone UT points in the final two minutes of the quarter came from a jumper from Goss with 20 seconds to go. The Rockets would take a 21-16 lead into the second frame.
2nd Quarter
  • Lockett scored the first four Toledo points of the quarter, and a three-pointer from Jansen at the 6:50 mark made it 28-19 in favor of the Midnight Blue and Gold.
  • Both teams were struck by an offensive drought, with neither squad finding the scoreboard until NIU's Emily Meinert drove to the hoop for two with 2:29 to go in the half.
  • Senior Sophia Wiard's first basket of the game, a three-pointer, came with 1:48 to play, and senior Soleil Barnes followed that up with an acrobatic layup with just over a minute to go to close out the scoring in the first half.
  • Toledo took a 33-23 lead into the locker room at halftime and held Northern Illinois to 8-of-30 shooting from the floor (26.7 percent).
3rd Quarter
  • Goss scored the first basket of the second half, but NIU responded with seven straight points to cut Toledo's lead in half, putting the score at 35-30.
  • The Rockets flipped the script and answered NIU's scoring run with a 12-2 run of their own to regain a double-digit lead, 47-32, with 2:57 left in the third quarter.
  • Sophomore Jessica Cook's first points of the game came in the waning seconds of the quarter and brought Toledo's lead to a game-high 17 points, 53-36.
4th Quarter
  • Davis and Koker fueled Northern Illinois' fourth-quarter scoring spurt, accounting for all 11 points to put their team within six, 53-47.
  • Brewer banked in a jumper off the glass for Toledo's first points of the quarter, but Koker and Sidney McCrea drilled back-to-back threes to make the score 55-53 with 4:52 to play.
  • Cook's layup pushed the lead back to four, but the Huskies scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 57-57 at the 3:36 mark.
  • After Lockett went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, Koker stepped to the charity stripe seconds later and made both of her shots to give Northern Illinois a 60-59 lead with 3:06 to go, its first lead of the game.
  • Lockett's three-pointer with 1:39 left gave the Rockets a 63-61 advantage, but Davis' layup on the other end once again tied the score at 63-63.
  • Wiard sank two free throws to put Toledo up 66-64 with 22 seconds remaining, but on the ensuing NIU possession Davis rebounded her own missed shot twice and didn't miss the third time, tying the score at 66-66.
  • A Toledo turnover with eight seconds left gave NIU the ball, and after Davis was fouled with a second to go in the game she made her first free throw and missed the second. The Rockets were unable to get a final shot off and wound up on the losing end of a 67-66 decision.
