TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Toledo junior
Cassie Alcala was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced on Thursday.
The reigning MAC Player of the Year enjoyed a stellar season-opening weekend for the Rockets, defending the No 1 singles court against Army and Michigan State last weekend.
The Pickerington, Ohio native took down Army's Cooper Jackson in a three-set decision. Alcala won the second set, 6-1, after dropping the first set, 4-6, to Jackson. Alcala was down 3-5 in the tiebreaker and fought off two match points to tie it at 5-5, and eventually went on to win the match 7-6(6).
Alcala faced MSU's Ayshe Can and came out victorious in a dominant 6-4, 7-5 final. Alcala registered one of Toledo's two wins against the Spartans.
Both wins extend Alcala's dual match win streak to eight matches since April 4, 2022.
This is Alcala's first MAC Singles Player of the week honor of the season and fifth in her career.
The Rockets will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 22 as they welcome Cleveland State to Twos Athletic Club.
