Rockets travel to Columbus Thursday evening to battle the Buckeyes

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team faces a huge challenge this Thursday, Jan. 19 when it travels to Columbus to take on No. 2 Ohio State. The Rockets (1-1, 0-0 MAC) and Buckeyes (2-0, 0-0 Big 10) will take the court at 5:00 p.m. in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
"We need this match because we need to get real-time feedback from match play," said head coach Al Wermer, who picked up his 300th career win in a victory over Boston University on Saturday. "Ohio State is a juggernaut, and when we play them, they don't take it easy on us—which speaks to their level of professionalism. We look forward to facing their high standard of talent and intensity."
About the Rockets
Toledo came away with a 7-0 sweep over Boston University on Saturday afternoon to mark its first win of the 2023 season and 300th career win for Wermer. Senior Marko Galic and junior Vlad Meluta secured the doubles team win in 7-5 decision from the No. 3 court to carry a 1-0 match lead into singles play. From there, the Rockets ran away with the match winning on all six singles courts. The next night, junior Pawit Sornlaksup was the only Toledo player to earn a win against Indiana. Toledo battled hard but were defeated 4-1 in Bloomington.
About No. 2 Ohio State
OSU opened its with back-to-back victories at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center, going 4-0 over Northern Kentucky and 7-0 over Xavier. Three of the Buckeyes, Justin Boulais, Alexander Bernard, and Andrew Lutschauing went 3-0 in their respective matches. The Buckeyes will face Cleveland State on Thursday afternoon before taking the court vs. the Rockets at 5:00 p.m.
