MUNCIE, Ind. – For the second straight game, the Toledo baseball team put on an offensive show at the MAC Tournament and this time it led to a 13-5 win over Ohio on Friday morning.
The Rockets now advance to another elimination game that is scheduled to be played at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. They will face the loser of the Ball State vs. Central Michigan matchup that is set to begin at 1:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Friday's game got off to a rocky start for the Rockets, who found themselves trailing 4-0 after the top of the first. Toledo answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first and continued to pile it on offensively, scoring at least 10 runs for the second straight game.
"I thought we did an unbelievable job today," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said "Offensively we had another strong game,
Garret Pike and
Mason Sykes have both had a great tournament so far.
Camryn Szynski had a rough first inning, but was lights out after that.
Jordan Power did an excellent job out of the bullpen to finish it out. We'll face either Ball State or Central Michigan next and we need to be ready to go for another elimination game, no matter who we face."
Szynski was terrific after the first inning, striking out seven and allowing just one hit over the next four frames. Power threw the final four innings, striking out two and allowing just one run to finish off the Bobcats.
Freshman
Garret Pike continued his torrid pace at the MAC Tournament going 3-for-5 with a home runs and three RBIs. Junior
Mason Sykes had another great day as well with three RBIs and a pair of doubles. Sophomore
Scott Mackiewicz and senior
John Servello both went 2-for-3 and combined to drive in three runs on Friday, with both of Servello's RBIs coming on a first-inning home run.
How it Happened
- Ohio got off to a quick start in the top of the first, loading the bases on two walks and a base hit before Mason Minzey hit a grand slam to put his team ahead 4-0 before the Rockets could record an out.
- Toledo didn't stay down for long, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to tie it up at 4-4. Mackiewicz drove in the first run on an RBI triple and Servello followed that up with a two-run homer to put UT within a run. Redshirt freshman Trey Wright tied the game with an RBI single into right field, erasing the four-run deficit.
- The Rockets added three more runs in the bottom of the second to make it 7-4. After Sykes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Ohio walked in a run and senior Nicky Winterstein drove in a run with a sac fly.
- After his rough top of the first, Szynski shut down the Bobcats for the next four innings, striking out seven while allowing just one hit and no runs.
- Toledo scored three in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-4. Pike's RBI single got things going, and Sykes followed with a double into the left-field corner to bring in two more runs.
- Ohio's Isaiah Peterson's solo home run in the top of the seventh cut UT's lead to 10-5.
- Pike's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth served as an exclamation point to Toledo's victory.
