TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo battled with Miami through five innings but a six-run explosion by the Redhawks in the sixth inning gave them a 12-3 run-rule victory over the Rockets at Scott Park on Wednesday
The Rockets tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning  when
Dayna Denner scored on a wild pitch by RedHawks' pitcher Courtney Vierstra. After the RedHawks regained the lead with three runs in the third inning, sophomore
Lauren Erickson hit a solo home run in the fourth to narrow the lead to 4-2. After Miami tacked on two more in the fifth, the Rockets countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 6-3. But the Redhawks sealed the deal with six runs in the sixth to give themselves a three-game series sweep.
Toledo will head to Akron this Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field. The Rockets and Zips will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on April 9 followed by a single game at noon on April 10.
How it Happened
- Miami's Karli Spaid hit an RBI single to left field to give Miami a 1-0 lead in the first.
- In the bottom of the first, senior Dayna Denner walked, advanced to second when sophomore Jenna Kroll was hit by a pitch, and then scored on two wild pitches to tie the game at 1-1
- In the third, Miami's Spaid sent a two-run homer to left field and Shelby Kunkle added an RBI single to give Miami a 4-1 edge.
- In the fifth, sophomore Lauren Erickson homered to centerfield with one out to cut the lead to 4-2.
- Miami scored two runs in the fifth on an RBI single and a solo homer to increase the lead to 6-2.
- Senior Aubrey Reed came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead to 6-3Â
- The RedHawks hit back-to-back solo bombs in the sixth, scored on an RBI double, and ended their run with a three-run dinger to make the score 12-3.
- Toledo put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth but could not get them home.
