KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The No. 2 seed Toledo men's tennis team fell to No. 1 Western Michigan, 4-2, in the championship match of the 2021-22 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Championships Sunday afternoon.
Western Michigan took an early start to the final match, winning on the No. 2 doubles court. Toledo's
Luka Jankovic/
Adam Kovac then picked up the win from the No. 3 court in a 7-5 decision, but WMU won the doubles team point with a 6-4 victory from the No. 1 court.
Sophomore
Pawit Sornlaksup tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win on the top court, marking his 22nd-straight singles match this season. Western Michigan picked up the No. 2 court win before junior
Marko Galic tied the match back up at 2-2 from the No. 6 court win. The Broncos went ahead with a win on the No. 4 court and clinched the match in a close 6-4, 6-3 win from the No. 5 court.
"We fought really hard," head coach
Al Wermer said. "The guys were ready to play as long as it took. I think the doubles point today made quite a difference. But in the end, Western Michigan was just a couple shots better than us today. Our guys each kept working, improving, and contributing all season."
At the conclusion of the match, Sornlaksup and Galic were each named to the MAC All-Tournament Team. Sornlaksup ended the season with a 22-2 overall and an unblemished 10-0 vs. MAC opponents from the No. 1 court. Galic finished with a 17-6 record and 9-1 against conference opponents.
