Rockets Drop Series Opener, 11-4, to Chippewas

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. – The Toledo softball team dropped its series opener at Central Michigan on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 11-4.

The Rockets fell behind early, trailing 9-1 through two innings, and were unable to make their way back despite a three-run top of the fifth. Central Michigan scored four runs in the first inning and five in the second to take a sizable lead, then senior Aubrey Reed slowly closed the gap with a three-run homer in the fifth. It wouldn't be enough, though, and the Rockets would drop their series opener.

Reed led the Rockets' offense with two hits, including her fourth home run of the season, and three RBIs. Freshman Sidney Griffith also added two hits and one RBI in the contest.

The Chippewas' Grace Lehto earned the win by yielding four runs in seven hits in a complete game.

The Rockets and Chippewas will be back at Margo Jonker Stadium for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Central Michigan used a pair of two-run homers by Shannon Stein and Caitlyn Britton to establish a 4-0 lead in the first.
  • Toledo answered in the second on freshman Sidney Griffith's RBI single.
  • CMU tacked on five more runs in the second to extend their lead 9-1, taking advantage of a throwing error, three RBI singles, and an RBI double.
  • The Rockets cut the lead 9-4 in the fifth with senior Aubrey Reed's three-run dinger.
  • The Chippewas closed out scoring in the fifth on two bases-loaded walks to make the final score 11-4.
