Rockets Suffer 3-1 Setback in Sunday Finale at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Toledo wrapped up its three-game weekend series at Elon with a 3-1 loss to the Phoenix on Sunday.

The Rockets allowed two runs in the bottom of the first and were unable to produce much offensively against Elon's strong pitching.

"I have to give credit to their starting pitcher," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "He threw a good game and kept our offense off-balance with a variety of off-speed pitches, even when we had opportunities to score. That elusive two-out hit never came and we couldn't push anything across. We come home 5-6 and having played some good baseball and some bad baseball these first three weeks. We have to learn from these 11 non-conference games and use that as we prepare to make our run through the MAC schedule. I still very much like this team and think we can meet all our goals. We just have to consistently play our brand of baseball."

Toledo managed one run on seven hits on Sunday, with redshirt freshman Trey Wright driving in the lone UT run. Junior Mason Sykes produced another multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4. Sophomore Scott Mackiewicz also went 2-for-4 and added a double in the leadoff spot.

Sophomore Connor Brandon got the start on the mound and struck out three in three innings. Senior Jordan Power pitched 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, and sophomore Camryn Szynski added 1.1 scoreless frames with a couple strikeouts.

Elon's Brian Edgington tossed 7.2 innings with six strikeouts while allowing just the one run, and Kyle Greenler threw 1.1 scoreless frames in relief.

Toledo begins Mid-American Conference play next weekend, visiting Akron for a four-game series to kick off the league portion of its schedule.

How it Happened

  • Elon scored twice on a Toledo error in the first inning to take an early lead.
  • Mackiewicz notched the Rockets' first hit of the day in the top of the third and advanced to second on an Elon error. The play left UT with runners on second and third with two outs, but both runners were left stranded.
  • The Rockets put two runners in scoring position once again in the top of the fourth, but again the inning ended with both standing on second and third.
  • The Phoenix added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sac fly to make it 3-0.
  • Wright spoiled the shutout with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Mackiewicz reached on a one-out double, then came around to score two batters later.
