Toledo Begins MAC Play with Weekend Series at Akron

TOLEDO, Ohio – Mid-American Conference play begins for the Toledo baseball team with a four-game series at Akron this weekend.

The original weekend schedule was altered to accommodate potential inclement weather in Northeast Ohio, so the Rockets and Zips will now play doubleheaders on Friday and Sunday beginning at noon on both days. Toledo visited Elon last weekend and dropped two out of three to the Phoenix in its final non-conference weekend before league play.

The Rockets won the first game of the series handily, 13-6, thanks to a career day from Mason Sykes, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and drove in seven runs for the second time in his career. Sophomore Jeron Williams tallied four hits and scored twice, while senior John Servello and freshman Brian Fry both recorded two hits at the plate.

- Mason Sykes has been one of the best hitters in the MAC through the first three weeks of the season. He ranks first in the league in hits (18) and RBIs (14), tied for second in home runs (4), third in slugging (.738), and fifth in batting average (.429).
- The Rockets also boast one of the best pitchers in the MAC through three weeks: Kyle Jones. Jones leads the MAC in innings pitched (19.0), wins (3), and strikeouts (24) and ranks third in ERA (2.37). His K/BB ratio is the best in the league and ranks 35th in the country.
- The pitching staff as a whole is holding opponents to a .254 batting average, second-lowest in the MAC.
- Jeron Williams has reached base in each of the last nine games, the longest such streak by a Rocket this season.
- The bullpen has had a solid start to the season and has done a good job holding down leads late in games; Toledo is 5-0 when leading after six innings.
