AKRON, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team opened Mid-American Conference play on Friday with a doubleheader at Akron and dropped both games to the Zips.
Akron won game one, 2-1, before taking game two, 5-2.
The Rockets' offense produced just one run on two hits in game one, a seven-inning affair. Senior
John Servello went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored the only Toledo run of the game. Junior
Kyle Jones started on the mound and pitched a complete game, striking out eight in six innings.
In game two, Akron used a four-run bottom of the third to take a lead that it would not relinquish. Freshman
Brian Fry drove in the only RBI for UT in the second contest, as the second run came in to score on an Akron error. Three pitchers saw time on the mound in game two, with freshman
Brennan McCune and junior
Cal McAninch combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Toledo and Akron will resume their weekend series on Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
How it Happened (Game 1)
- The Rockets struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Sykes reached one a two-out error that also allowed Servello to score and give UT a 1-0 lead.
- The offensive well ran dry for Toledo for the remainder of the game, which managed just two baserunners in the final six innings.
- Akron tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Ian Pennington reached on a one-out triple and came in to score two pitches later.
- The Zips scored the game-winning run in the next inning on an RBI double from Michael Sprockett.
How it Happened (Game 2)
- The Zips scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- Fry's RBI double in the top of the third tied the score at 1-1. Freshman Brayden White opened the inning with a base hit, then scored from first base on Fry's two-bagger.
- Akron's four-run third inning put the Rockets in a 5-1 hole.
- Toledo got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth to put the score at 5-2. Junior Mason Sykes reached on a two-out error, then came around to score on another Akron error.
- Redshirt freshman Trey Wright provided a pinch-hit double in the top of the ninth, but the Rockets were unable to drive him home.
