NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team concluded its weekend series at Belmont with a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm disappointed in the way we played today," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "Our pitchers threw well and did a good job of keeping us in the game, but we didn't perform up to our standards offensively today. With a lineup full of proven, veteran hitters, I expected us to have a better weekend at the plate. The pitching has been solid, we just need to get the bats going, and I'm confident we will be able to do that."
The Rockets wound up on the wrong end of a shutout for the second straight day, tallying three hits against a trio of Belmont pitchers. Sophomore
Scott Mackiewicz recorded the only extra-base hit of the afternoon, a sixth-inning double, while redshirt freshman
Trey Wright and sophomore
Jeron Williams recorded base hits as well.
Senior
Jordan Power started on the mound and tossed five innings. Redshirt freshman
Patrick Dillon, sophomore
Gavin Starcher, and sophomore
Parker Newby combined to toss three shutout innings at the end of the game.
The Rockets' bullpen proved to be a bright spot this weekend. Eight pitchers combined to throw 13.0 innings out of the pen while posting a 0.69 ERA. UT's relief pitchers struck out 14 while walking just three.
Next weekend, Toledo heads to High Point for a four-game series.
How it Happened
- The Bruins struck first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Belmont's Guy Lipscomb drove in the first run with a two-out triple down the line in right field, and he came around to score on the very next pitch when John Behrends ripped a single into right field.
- Belmont's Logan Jarvis launched a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0.
- The Rockets had chances in the fifth and six innings. Wright reached on a leadoff single in the fifth and Mackiewicz reached second on a one-out double in the sixth inning, but neither advanced further.
- Belmont's pitchers flummoxed Toledo in the final three innings, retiring the final nine batters of the game.
