TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team returns to the court to host Canisius on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. Friday's game between the Rockets and Golden Griffins will be streamed live on ESPN3.
The Rockets kicked off their season at home on Monday with an 88-56 win over Wright State in their annual Education Day game. Before a raucous crowd of 4,617 that included over 1,300 local elementary school children, UT stormed out to a 30-3 lead over the Raiders and never looked back.
Sophomore
Jessica Cook turned in her fourth career double-double, tying a career-high with 19 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Cook also had a double-double in the first game of the year last season, and followed up that performance with another one against Wright State the next game. Two of her four career double-doubles have come against the Raiders.
On Monday, three other players reached double figures in scoring: senior
Jayda Jansen (12 points), senior
Quinesha Lockett (10 points), and junior
Nan Garcia (10 points). Jansen was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and made both of her three-point field goals. Junior
Khera Goss added nine points to help the cause and senior
Soleil Barnes knocked down a pair of three-pointers off the bench.
Toledo shot 52.2 percent from the floor and held Wright State to a 35.1 field goal percentage. The Rockets also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Raiders 47-27.
Rocket Notes
- UT held Wright State to three points in first quarter, the fewest by an opponent since allowing two points in the second quarter vs. Iona on Nov. 14, 2018, which is a school record.
- Toledo and Canisius have met three times and the Rockets have won all three meetings. The last matchup between these two teams came on Dec. 29, 2019 at Savage Arena, a game that UT won 83-65.
- Head Coach Tricia Cullop won her 297th career game as the Rockets' head coach on Monday, putting her just three victories away from 300 for her career at Toledo.
- Quinesha Lockett's 1,394 career points are 17th all-time and just 16 away from moving past Lucretia Legault (1988-92) and into 16th place all-time.
- Jessica Cook also had a double-double in the first game of the year last season, and followed up that performance with another one against Wright State the next game. Two of her four career double-doubles have come against the Raiders.
- Jayda Jansen had a perfect shooting day on Monday, connecting on 4-of-4 shots from the floor, including two three-pointers, while making 2-of-2 free throws.
- No team in the MAC had a better start to the year than the Rockets, who posted the highest point total (88), field goal percentage (52.2), and rebounding margin (+20) of any other team in the league. They also allowed fewer points (56) than any other MAC school in their season opener.
- Toledo has now won four straight season openers and six of its last seven. UT also improved to 33-15 all-time in home openers.
About Canisius
Canisius enters Friday's game at 1-0 after winning its season opener against Buffalo on Monday. The Golden Griffins trailed by eight points entering the fourth quarter but staged a late comeback to defeat their in-state rivals. Dani Haskell led the Griffs with 17 points and teammate Sisi Eleko added 10 points and six rebounds.
Next Up for Toledo
The Rockets have two big opponents on the docket for next week, beginning with a road game at Cincinnati on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 11:00 a.m. Toledo follows that up with a home game against Duke on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear gold at the Duke game as part of Toledo's "Gold Rush Week" next week that will highlight big games across Rocket Athletics.
