Toledo Falls to Illinois 1-0 to End Record-Setting Streak

TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday with a 1-0 setback against Illinois at Paul Hotmer Field. It wasn't until the 78th minute that the lone goal was scored, proving to be the difference.

"I'm proud of our girls," Head Coach TJ Buchholz said. "This was a strong Big Ten team in Illinois and you have to make plays. Credit to Illinois, they capitalized on their opportunity and made a play. We had our chances and we have to put those away. Our defense was awesome. It was definitely a team effort and we received a lot of contributions. At the end of the day, we battled hard but we just have to put one of the shots away. We have to build on this and finish our non-conference schedule strong."

Goals and Key Moments
  • 2' | Illinois logged the first shot of the day as sophomore Emma Boutorwick leaped to knock it away with outstretched arms.
  • 8' | Junior Stitch Currie put the first Rocket attempt on goal, but it was saved by Illinois goalkeeper Naomi Jackson.
  • 27' | Boutorwick snagged a strong attempt by the Illini to keep it scoreless.
  • 51' | Boutorwick made an incredible save thanks to a diving effort.
  • 63' | Sophomore Ellie Pool nearly scored, but Illinois knocked the ball away before the Rockets could get to the rebound.
  • 78' | GOAL Illinois used a trio of rebounds after a free kick inside the box to score the only goal of the game, coming from Sydney Stephens.
