Toledo Takes Down Northern Illinois, 7-3

DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Toledo baseball team (21-28, 19-14 MAC) opened its weekend series against Northern Illinois (14-33, 13-20 MAC) with a 7-3 victory on Friday.

"It's always good to get the weekend started off with a win," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We did just that tonight. Layne Schnitz-Paxton gave us another quality start and Cal McAninch came in strong in relief. Both guys pitched well and saved the bullpen. The offense was solid against a good arm for NIU. Tacking on the three runs in the ninth inning put the game out of reach. We need to come back tomorrow ready to go and win this series."

Toledo scored two in the second inning and one in the third to take an early lead and never trailed on Friday. Darryn Davis, Trace Hatfield, and Nicky Winterstein all tallied two RBIs in the win and Danny O'Reilly drove in a run as well. Hatfield hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, and both Davis and Winterstein led the Rockets with three hits apiece.

Schnitz-Paxton improved to 7-1 on the season by earning the win on Friday. The senior struck out nine in five innings, allowing two runs and walking just one. McAninch earned his second save of the season by pitching four innings out of the bullpen, striking out two.

The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET.

How it Happened
  • The game was originally slated to start at 3:00 p.m. ET, but didn't get underway until 5:30 p.m. ET because of rain.
  • Toledo struck first with a couple runs in the top of the second. Davis and O'Reilly smacked back-to-back RBI doubles to put UT ahead 2-0.
  • Winterstein's two-out RBI single in the top of the third put Toledo up 3-0.
  • NIU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 3-1. With runners at first and second, Brady Huebbe laced a single into center field that scored the Huskies' first run of the game.
  • Hatfield launched his fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth to put the Rockets' lead back at three, making the score 4-1.
  • The Huskies answered back with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to two, 4-2.
  • An RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh by NIU trimmed the Toledo lead to one, 4-3.
  • Toledo added three more runs in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to 7-3. Hatfield doubled into the gap in left center field, then later scored on Winterstein's single up the middle. Davis then drove in Winterstein to tally the third run of the inning.
