Toledo Knocks Off MAC Champ Ball State for Ninth Straight Win

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's tennis team ended its season on Sunday with an incredible, come-from-behind win over 2021 MAC Champions Ball State, handing the Cardinals their first conference loss of the year in a 4-3 decision at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.

Trailing 3-0 in the match, the Rockets won the next four singles matches to stun Ball State (22-3, 13-1 MAC). Toledo will finish its season with a 15-7 overall record and an 11-3 mark in conference play, ending its season with a remarkable nine-match winning streak.

"I'm not at a loss for words much but this team just continues to amaze me," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "To be down 0-3 to a team that hasn't lost in the MAC and has won 22 straight matches, and to battle all the way back is unreal. I've never had a team that fights or plays more for their teammates than this one. Proud is an understatement."

Guiding a team that saw the majority of its production from underclassmen, Mauntler won her 200th career match on Sunday.

Ball State won doubles matches on the No. 1 and 3 courts to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cardinals then claimed singles victories on courts No. 3 and 6, putting Toledo in a 3-0 hole and on the brink of defeat.

Freshman Shalini Tallamraju was the first Rocket to win, defeating her Ball State counterpart on the No. 5 court in two sets. Freshman Cassie Alcala came back to win on the top court to make it 3-2, overcoming a first-set loss and a 3-2 deficit in the second set to win and improve to 18-4 in singles play on the year.

Senior Patricia Panta outlasted her opponent in a long first set, then won the second set to tie the match at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 2 singles court and the battle between sophomore Sloane Teske and Ball State's Jessica Braun. Braun won the first set 6-4, then Teske took the second set to bring the entire match down to the decisive third set on the No. 2 court. Teske then won 6-2 to emphatically cap an incredible comeback win to end the Rockets' season.
