TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior
Makenna Durieux struck out a season-high six batters and allowed just one run to lead the Toledo softball team to a Senior Day triumph over Akron on Sunday at Scott Park. The victory provided the Rockets a season-high five-game winning streak and a 31-22 overall (21-16 MAC) record to take into their off-season.
"We won 11 of our last 16 after our Miami series and were playing our best ball toward the end of the year," Head Coach
Joe Abraham said. "You always want to finish strong and I think our strong finish shows the character and professionalism of our players."
Durieux opened the game on fire, striking out the side in the first and two more in the second. She limited the Zips to just three hits in the first five innings before surrendering a pair in the sixth. Senior
Erin Hunt registered the final two outs in the sixth before closing out the game in the seventh.
"Makenna tossed a game that has become her norm which is being efficient and moving the ball around," Abraham said. "She hung a few in the sixth when we made a change, but she finished the season great. That's exciting for us moving forward."
Toledo never trailed in the contest after taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Rockets then added a run in the third and two runs each in the fourth and fifth for a 7-0 advantage. Akron's scoring came with a single run in the sixth and four in the seventh.
