Danny O’Reilly’s Two Home Runs Lead Toledo Past Ohio, 7-6

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team wrapped up its weekend with a 7-6 victory over Ohio on Sunday at Scott Park.

"I'm really proud of the team and the way they finished the weekend," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "This is the third weekend in a row we had a chance to pull off a weekend split, and we got it done today. It was back and forth, but we just kept finding ways to score. Danny O'Reilly had a great weekend and really stepped up today at the plate. Cal McAninch came in again the kept the Ohio hitters at bay in the final three innings. It was a good team win and a much-needed step forward as we learn how to win as a program."

O'Reilly led the way offensively with two home runs and five RBIs, both career-highs. His first homer tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, and his second gave Toledo the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Meyers and Marcus Strother drove in the other two runs for the Rockets, and Nicky Winterstein and Mason Sykes both had two-hit days.

McAninch earned the win for the second straight game, throwing 2.2 innings and striking out three. Connor Brandon started the game on the mound and tossed 5.0 innings while striking out three. Sam Servello pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Toledo visits Kent State next weekend for a four-game series before returning home to host Akron for four games on April 16-18.

How it Happened
  • The first run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Strother laced a double down the line in left field to score Zach Schwartzenberger and give Toledo a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bobcats took the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. A two-run base hit up the middle put OU on top, then two straight RBI singles brought in runs three and four to put the Rockets in a 4-1 hole.
  • O'Reilly tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Sykes reached on a single and Trace Hatfield walked, then both trotted home on the long ball from O'Reilly.
  • Ohio took a 5-4 lead with a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh.
  • Toledo retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Meyers tied the game with a base hit into right field, then O'Reilly launched his second home run of the day to put UT ahead 7-5.
  • Ohio added a solo home run in the top of the eighth, but that was the last run McAninch allowed in the final two innings to help secure the win for the second straight game.
