TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Friday with a 16-13 slugfest against Western Michigan.
The Broncos were able to use three big innings to bury the Rockets and capture the first game of this weekend series. WMU scored six in the third, five in the sixth, and four in the seventh to continually stay in the lead. Toledo answered each time by scoring four runs in the third, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh, but couldn't match the Broncos' offensive output. The Rockets surged late with four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Danny O'Reilly drove in four runs, three of which came on a three-run homer, his sixth of the season.
John Servello and
Mason Sykes both tallied three RBIs, and
Chris Meyers walked twice and scored a team-high three runs.
Wyatt Jefferson started on the mound for Toledo and threw 4.1 innings while striking out four.
Sam Servello,
Cal McAninch, and
Nate Haugh all saw time out of the bullpen as well.
Toledo and Western Michigan will face off again on Saturday in a seven-inning doubleheader beginning at Noon. Both games can be streamed live on ESPN+.
How it Happened
- Toledo took an early lead in the bottom of the first. Meyers was intentionally walked, Trace Hatfield reached on an infield single, and O'Reilly drove in the run with a base hit into left field to put Toledo up 1-0.
- WMU took control with a six-run top of the third. Two deep fly balls to left field resulted in sacrifice flies, then Ethan Hajdukovic blasted a two-out grand slam to right field to make it 6-1.
- The Rockets battled back with a four-run bottom of the third, highlighted by O'Reilly's three-run home run to right field that made it 6-5.
- Sam Servello entered the game with a runner on third base and one out in the top of the fifth and was able to escape unscathed.
- The Broncos tacked on five more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 11-5. Hajdukovic continued his strong day by driving in two more runs to push WMU into double digits.
- Sykes blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left field to make it 11-7 in the bottom of the sixth.
- WMU scored four in the top of the seventh, three of which came on a three-run homer from Connor Charping to put the Rockets in a 15-7 hole.
- Toledo scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of bases-loaded walks, putting the score at 15-9.
- Charping lined a single into center field in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 16-9.
- The Rockets did not go down quietly. Nicky Winterstein walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run, then Servello drilled a bases-clearing double into the gap in right-center field to make it 16-13. The comeback attempt would fall short though, and the Broncos would go on to win game one of the weekend series.
