ÂÂÂTOLEDO, Ohio – After dropping a tough 5-3 (9 inn.) decision to Bowling Green in the opener of Tuesday's doubleheader, the Toledo softball team (19-12, 9-6 MAC) held a 6-1 lead over the Falcons (18-18, 10-11 MAC) in the second game before it was suspended due to inclement weather conditions in the bottom of the fourth inning. The contest will be resumed on a date that is yet to be determined.
Â
After Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the lead changed hands three times in the fifth and sixth innings before going to extra innings. The Falcons scored two runs in the ninth when Nikki Sorgi's fly ball to shallow right field eluded junior second baseman
Aleah Marra after she was unable to get around the first-base umpire standing on the outfield grass.
Â
"It was tough to lose the opener after we took the lead," Head Coach
Joe Abraham said. "We have won most of these tight games this season, but you're not going to win them all. It was great to see us come out in Game Two and put four on the board right away. We need to finish the game off when we pick it back up."
Â
Redshirt freshman Peyton Gottshall (12-6) earned the victory for the Falcons after allowing 12 hits, three runs and six walks and striking out 10 in nine innings. Senior
Erin Hunt (14-9) was saddled with the defeat after yielding nine hits, five runs and four walks with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Â
"We battled Gottshall hard all game," Abraham said. "She is really good and we scored some runs and left plenty on base."
Â
Senior third baseman
Dayna Denner paced the Rockets' 12-hit attack with three hits, while junior leftfielder
Leah Munson collected a pair of hits, including a game-tying double in the sixth.
Â
Toledo will return to action this weekend when it hosts conference leader Miami (27-7, 17-1 MAC) in a four-game series on Friday-Sunday, April 23-25.
