Rockets Stifle Zips, 6-1

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team defeated Akron at home on Friday, 6-1, for its sixth win in its last seven games.

The Rockets took advantage of a couple Akron errors in the bottom of the first to score four runs and they wouldn't look back. Wyatt Jefferson and Jamie Myers provided solid pitching for UT, allowing just the one run and scattering eight hits. Jefferson started the game and threw 4.2 innings, striking out four, while Myers finished with 4.1 scoreless frames.

At the plate, Trace Hatfield drove in two runs and Justin Diaz added an RBI as well. Chris Meyers was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an intentional walk, and Nicky Winterstein scored three of Toledo's six runs from the leadoff spot. John Servello was 1-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base on the day.

The series continues on Saturday with a seven-inning doubleheader beginning at Noon at Scott Park. Both games will be available on ESPN+.

How it Happened
  • Winterstein reached on a two-base error by the center fielder to start the game, then came around to score on Hatfield's two-run double into the gap in right-center field.
  • Two batters later, Diaz drove in Hatfield with an infield single to make it 3-0. After reaching on a base hit, Danny O'Reilly scored on another Akron error to make it 4-0 after one inning.
  • Winterstein scampered home on a double steal in the bottom of the second to put the Rockets ahead by five.
  • The Zips got on the board with a solo home run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1.
  • Myers entered the game with the bases loaded in fifth, but needed just one pitch to get out of the inning.
  • Toledo tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth, with Winterstein scoring on a bases-loaded wild pitch to make the score 6-1.
