Toledo Drops Hard-Fought 4-3 Battle at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The University of Toledo women's tennis team faced MAC-leading Ball State on Sunday and gave the Cardinals all they could handle, but ultimately fell by a score of 4-3 in Muncie.
"We had some slow starts today but I'm incredibly proud of how my players fought today in singles," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "They are learning and getting better each weekend. I'm confident there are special things ahead for this group."
Ball State started the afternoon off by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Freshman Cassie Alcala and sophomore Sloane Teske won on the top doubles court, 6-2, but the Cardinals posted victories on courts No. 2 and 3 to capture the point.
In singles play, Ball State won courts No. 3 and 4, respectively, to go up 3-0 over the Rockets. Toledo did not back down, though, winning on the top two courts to apply some pressure on the Cardinals. Teske overcame a first-set loss to defeat her BSU counterpart on the No. 2 court, and Alcala was victorious on the top court to keep the Rockets alive. Ball State was able to win on the No. 5 court, however, to claim its fourth point and clinch the match. Freshman Shalini Tallamraju also came back from a loss in the first set to win a three-set decision on the No. 6 court to close out competition on Sunday.
Toledo is back in action when it visits Bowling Green on Friday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m.
